What Planet Are They From?

Every so often, someone will tell me that if I really wanted to be married, I'd just pick someone up at the supermarket or a restaurant. Or just accost someone on the way to class and strike up a conversation. Now my former roommate was really good at that. He'd spot a girl and have her in bed within a week. He was amazing at it. But I gotta wonder...how many people who tell me that I'd find true love by bothering some random person while she looks at peas married someone that either they picked up or picked them up in such a way? How many eligible young women are interested in getting picked up by a random guy? I'll bet "not many" is the answer to both questions. But there are apparently lots who like to sleep with strangers. Like my old roommate.

Yeah, that's pretty lousy advice.

In all seriousness, if you wanted to get married you'd just join an evangelical megachurch. I'm guessing your current church is a pretty small pond...

I understand that recommendation to join an evangelical megachurch. Like you Josh, I would gag at such an idea.

At my LCMS church there is nobody of my age that is single, since all of them are married.

I married that last single guy in my church. I can't imaging meeting someone over peas unless you run into one another week after week buying peas, then by all means ask the woman out! BUT reality is that you get to know another person by seeing that person in a mutually enjoyable place week after week. So, in that respect church is a good place to meet. I don't really believe that "love at first sight" really pans out. It is nice to get to know a person first.

I'm a confident person, but I get quite embarressed by random strangers picking me up. And I usually assume they have some sort of mental illness. Maybe it's an Australian thing - sane guys here tend not to hit on girls in places like the supermarket.
